Jan 12, 2017 10:05 PM - jjl: never tell a cop you "understand"
    Jan 12, 2017 10:07 PM - jjl:
Jan 12, 2017 10:13 PM - Gatecrasher: Old English understandan "comprehend, grasp the idea of," probably literally "stand in the midst of," from under + standan "to stand" (see stand). If this is the meaning, the under is not the usual word meaning "beneath," but from Old English under, from PIE *nter- "between, among" (cf. Sanskrit antar "among, between," Latin inter "between, among," Greek entera "intestines;" see inter-).
Jan 12, 2017 10:14 PM - Gatecrasher: That is the suggestion in Barnhart, but other sources regard the "among, between, before, in the presence of" sense of Old English prefix and preposition under as other meanings of the same word. "Among" seems to be the sense in many Old English compounds that resemble understand, e.g. underniman "to receive," undersecan "to investigate," underginnan "to begin."
Jan 12, 2017 10:14 PM - Gatecrasher: It also seems to be the sense still in expressions such as under such circumstances.
Jan 12, 2017 10:15 PM - Gatecrasher: Perhaps the ultimate sense is "be close to," cf. Greek epistamai "I know how, I know," literally "I stand upon." Similar formations are found in Old Frisian (understonda), Middle Danish (understande), while other Germanic languages use compounds meaning "stand before" (cf. German verstehen, represented in Old English by forstanden).
Jan 12, 2017 10:15 PM - Gatecrasher: For this concept, most Indo-European languages use figurative extensions of compounds that literally mean "put together," or "separate," or "take, grasp" (see comprehend). Old English oferstandan, Middle English overstonden, literally "over-stand" seem to have been used only in literal senses.
Jan 12, 2017 10:16 PM - jjl: legl language works differently
Jan 12, 2017 10:17 PM - jjl: and when you tell s cop you understand it gives him authority over you
Jan 12, 2017 10:17 PM - jjl: say to him or her" I comprehend
Jan 12, 2017 10:17 PM - Gatecrasher: Are cops taught this consciously? Do you know?
    Jan 12, 2017 10:18 PM - jjl: I beleive that they are
Jan 12, 2017 10:19 PM - Gatecrasher: I remember learning that in legal language the word "human" means "monster". But I never found that in Black's Legal Dictionary?
Jan 12, 2017 10:19 PM - jjl: there are a lot of things we are ignorant about with what is legal
Jan 12, 2017 10:19 PM - jjl: hidden from us
    Jan 12, 2017 10:19 PM - jjl: deliberately confounding
    Jan 12, 2017 10:20 PM - Gatecrasher: yep
Jan 12, 2017 10:21 PM - jjl: for instance a cop can smoke weed all day long and get hazard pay for it after he busts whoever gave him the weed
    Jan 12, 2017 10:21 PM - Gatecrasher: that's lousy ethics, LOL
Jan 12, 2017 10:22 PM - Gatecrasher: and entrapment which was once illegal
Jan 12, 2017 10:22 PM - jjl: well anyone that wants to dominate you generally does not concern themselves in that way
Jan 12, 2017 10:22 PM - jjl: I had a cop hanging around my store and me for months
Jan 12, 2017 10:23 PM - Gatecrasher: I know quite a few cops, I think I'm going to ask them how they understand the meaning of the word, Understand, :)
Jan 12, 2017 10:23 PM - jjl: were convinced I had to be up to something because no one would make the kind of effort I was making for such a small reward
Jan 12, 2017 10:23 PM - jjl: they wont always tell you but it is a start
Jan 12, 2017 10:24 PM - jjl: LOL maybe YOU are a cop
Jan 12, 2017 10:24 PM - Gatecrasher: I'll observe their nonverbal responses, too. Watch as they answer.
    Jan 12, 2017 10:24 PM - jjl: (maybe I am)
    Jan 12, 2017 10:24 PM - jjl: lmao
    Jan 12, 2017 10:24 PM - Gatecrasher: LOL,
Jan 12, 2017 10:25 PM - jjl: maybe I arrest people when I sleep and dont even know it
Jan 12, 2017 10:25 PM - jjl: no wonder I am so tired every morning
    Jan 12, 2017 10:25 PM - Gatecrasher: hmmm....
Jan 12, 2017 10:25 PM - jjl: fighting crime all night
Jan 12, 2017 10:26 PM - jjl: commiting it by day
    Jan 12, 2017 10:36 PM - jjl:
Jan 12, 2017 10:37 PM - jjl: they followed the script to the letter. Some neighbors let cops fool them and they had legal battles and drug testing for 5 years
Jan 12, 2017 10:59 PM - Gatecrasher: more on etymology,
    Jan 12, 2017 10:59 PM - Gatecrasher:
Jan 12, 2017 11:09 PM - Gatecrasher: these ideas are interesting, it's important to choose words, and even thoughts, wisely,
Jan 12, 2017 11:10 PM - Gatecrasher: but can they also become circular, where people can get all tense, twisted up in knots, trying to avoid mistakes about how they are using words?
Jan 12, 2017 11:12 PM - Gatecrasher: which carries more weight, the energy of the intent, or the vehicle of the word carrying the energy of intent? What do you think? Feel? :)

Jan 17, 2017 2:22 PM - Gatecrasher: sound works for me
Jan 17, 2017 3:24 PM - jjl: all the way thru?
Jan 17, 2017 3:24 PM - jjl: it only works at first for me, it goes silent about 1/4 the way thru
Jan 17, 2017 4:16 PM - Gatecrasher: hmmm, it was working last night, maybe there was a copyright issue
Jan 17, 2017 8:32 PM - Gatecrasher: I like to think my purpose is to enjoy life. In moments of lucidity, however, I realize that my purpose is to feed goats. What is confusing is that I enjoy feeding goats.
Jan 17, 2017 8:55 PM - jjl: yes? I was born to duck
Jan 17, 2017 9:34 PM - Gatecrasher: LOL to both of the above
    Jan 17, 2017 10:25 PM - jjl: it's not the feeding, it's the milking.
